Step-by-step instructions to make a bird costume using tulle
Next, here are the materials and sewing notions you’ll need and some tips for easy assembly.
Materials
- 1.10 m of rustic cotton fabric. For the parrot cape we have used Rustic Cotton in burgundy or for the swan, Rustic Cotton in white.
- Rolls of tulle in your favorite colors.
- Satin or similar grosgrain ribbon, measuring 10–15 mm wide by 1 m long.
- Thread that matches the fabric.
Tips and tricks before sewing
Of course, all fabrics can be adapted to your favorite colors and designs. It’s important to wash and iron your fabrics before starting to work with them. To work with tulle, there is no need to wash or iron it beforehand.
In the video you’ll see the measurements to make the cape. We’ll make a cape measuring 45 – 50 cm long, a universal size for children from 3 to 8 years old. All the pattern pieces already include 1 cm of seam allowance.

Pattern cutting to sew a tropical bird costume
- Start cutting out all the pieces of the cape as indicated in the video. You need 2 pieces measuring 50 – 45 cm long.
- Next, place the pattern pieces with right sides facing each other. Inside, place the satin ribbon 2 cm from the neckline. Seam both pieces together leaving a gap a few centimeters wide to turn the cape right side out.
- Turn the cape right side out and close the opening.
- Gather the tulle and sew it to the cape, creating parallel lines in your favorite color combination.
- And done! Your cape for this bird costume is ready.
How to make a swan mask
