- Adhesive tape (optional)
Recommendations and useful information for your macramé wall hanging
- In this video tutorial we use Katia Macramé Cord Fine color 200 - White (2.5 mm thick), but you are welcome to use Macramé Cord in the color that you like for this project! (the thicker the cord the larger the final piece will be)
- It’s important to use macramé cord (also known as plied cord) for this project – and any other macramé projects – so you can comb it out to create the fringe
- The cord measurements given in this tutorial are to make a final piece that is 23 cm long (from the ring to the tip of the feather/fringe) and 14 cm wide (at the widest part of the feather/fringe)
- The knots used to make this piece are: Lark’s Head Knot, Square Knot, and Vertical Lark’s Head Knot
- To stop fraying you can wrap the ends of the cords with adhesive tape
- You can use a wooden bar (with cord attached to hang it) instead of a wooden ring if you prefer the look
Now it’s time to macramé! Using our video and guide below we hope you fall in love with this textile handicraft and make something you want to hang proudly in your home.
How to make your macramé feather wall hanging step by step
-
Cut the cord
- 4 x 1.60 m
- 24 x 20 cm
-
Attach the cord to the wooden ring
- Fold the 4 lengths of the 160 m cord in half, place the loop (created by the fold) inside the ring and pass the two ends of the cord through it and pull to fasten. This is a Lark’s Head Knot
- Do this with all 4 cords. This will give you 8 strands of cord to work with
-
Make the diamond patterns
- Take the 4 center strands and make a Square Knot
- Make two rows of Vertical Lark’s Head Knots that run diagonally from the center: one towards to the right side and one towards the left side
- Hold the central cords out diagonally (left and right) and use them as guide cords
- Do the the Vertical Lark’s Head Knots on the right side first
- Repeat the same stages on the left side
- Tie a double Square Knot in the center – do this by tying a Square Knot (as you did earlier) but this time use 2 cords on each side
- Make another row of Vertical Lark’s Head Knots that run diagonally (use the same guide cords as before)
- Do the the Vertical Lark’s Head Knots on the right side first
- Repeat the same stages on the left side to complete the diamond shape
- Do a Square Knot underneath each diamond to close
- Repeat this process two more times to make two more diamonds (you should have 3 diamonds in total)
- Do a final Square Knot at the bottom
-
Create the fringing
- Cut the cords approximately 6-7 cm from the bottom Square Knot and keep the excess cord strands
Remember these measurements are based on making a piece that is 23 cm long and 14 cm wide. You can cut these cords to the length you want the fringe to be
- Fold each of the excess cords in half and tie each of them with a Lark’s Head Knot to the outer loops down each side. Aim for approximately 4 knots per loop
- Remove the adhesive tape if you have used it
- Untangle and fray the cords by placing your piece on a flat surface and brushing/combing them out
- Cut this fringe into a feather shape
- Spray the fringe with hairspray to keep them in place (this is optional)
All that’s left to do now is hang your macramé feather on the wall!
