The unicorn is a wonderful mythical creature that lives in the hearts and minds of children everywhere. The materials you will need to crochet the magical unicorn hat are:
Yarn:
2 x balls Cream (80) for the main part of the hat
1 x ball Light Mustard (91) for the star and horn
1 x ball Orange-fuchsia-green-blue-lilac (7871) for the mane
Hook:
US J-10 / 6mm crochet hook
Notions:
Yarn needle
Stuffing material
1 pair of transparent press studs
1 safety pin
Sewing needle
White sewing thread
Finished size:
19 ⅝ inches-20 ½ inches (50 cm-52 cm) head diameter
To fit children 6 to 8 years old

INSTRUCTIONS
Collar (A, make 1)
With Cream, ch 86.
Row 1. Sc in second ch and in each ch across, turn. 85 sts
Rows 2-10. Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
At the end of last row, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Base of hood (B)
With Cream, ch 46.
Row 1. Sc in second ch and in each ch across, turn. 45 sts
Rows 2-24. Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Do not fasten off, proceed with Hood (C).
Hood (C)
Preparation row. Ch 1, sc in first and next 21 sts on Base of hood, turn. 22 sts
Row 1. Ch 1, sc2tog with first 2 sts, sc in each st across, turn. 21 sts
Row 2. Ch 1, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog, turn. 20 sts.
Rows 3-6. Repeat Rows 1-2 twice. 16 sts.
At the end of last row, fasten off.
Hood (D)
After last stitch on Hood (C) - Preparation row, skip 1 st and join yarn.
Base row. Ch 1, sc in first and next 21 sts on Base of hood, turn. 22 sts
Row 1. Ch 1, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog, turn. 21 sts
Row 2. Ch 1, sc2tog with first 2 sts, sc in each st across, turn.. 20 sts.
Rows 3-6. Repeat Rows 1-2 twice. 16 sts.
At the end of last row, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Horn (make 1)
With Light Mustard, make 4 sc in a magic ring, do not join - work in continuous rounds.
Round 1. [Sc in next st, inc in next] twice. 6 sts
Round 2. Sc in each st around.
Round 3. [Sc in next st, inc in next] 3x. 9 sts
Round 4. Sc in each st around.
Round 5. [Sc in next 2 sts, inc in next] 3x. 12 sts

Round 4. Sc in each st around.
Round 5. [Sc in next 2 sts, inc in next] 3x. 12 sts

Round 7. [Sc in next 3 sts, inc in next] 3x. 15 sts
Round 8. [Sc in next 4 sts, inc in next] 3x. 18 sts
Round 9. [Sc in next 2 sts, inc in next] 6x. 24 sts
Round 10. [Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog] 6x, sl st in first st to join. 18 sts
At the end of last round, sl st in first st to join, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Assembly
- Sew C to D to close the hood.
- Sew center sts of A to B, leaving 20 sts on either side.
3-4. Sew the ears and horn to the top of the hood, as shown.
- Sew the star to the right side edge of the collar.
- Sew half of the transparent stud onto the left side edge of the collar and the other half inside the collar where it is joined to the hood.
- Cut strands of Azteca 11 ¾ inches (30 cm) long for the fringe and 23 ½ inches (60 cm) long for the mane. Arrange and attach these around the horn (fringe) and down the center of the hood (mane), forming three rows.
Weave all ends in.
